Post Ballots Are In, Now What?  Posted Jul 9, 2006; 4:11 pm

Delegates of the 2006 MB Canadian Calgary Gathering will leave with some interesting discussions in cars and planes. There is no slippery slope for me to watch for. Legislators have made the conference position clear we need not participate in fear mongering. The votes are in - someone knows the results. Let's get it out before it's old news.

It passed with a 77% majority.

Amen! But wait. That means there are 33% among us that hold a position that is at variance with the majority. Oh my! Might this challenge us to remain united in disagreement? I hope we will foster the attitudes and practices necessary to not cover over our state of disagreement but to offer further opportunities for conversation on an issue that has been voted on, but not agreed upon.

Don't worry marco - this is the second vote that I know of regarding "women in leadership". So I'm sure it will continue to be a topic, just not one in the forefront now.

Just a quibble, but according to my math it would be just under a quarter, not a third.

100%-77%=23%
So 23% still are in disagreement.Give it a few years and that number might come down. 77% is a pretty strong mandate.
This was a delegate vote. Not a total conference membership vote.
All members of the Canadian conference should have a vote on this.

Comments like this turn my crank because:
1.) They show me that something is missing in the understanding of the process.
2.) The vote that represents those in the minority have issues that need attention.
3.) Is it possible that those in majority also have issues that are not characteristic of a Christ follower?
4.) We're oblivious of the what really matters and strike out miserably when it does matter.

You make no sense to me Rudy. You make these comments ,yet you don't explain yourself.
I am just looking for some governence by all model.Like we used to have in the Reform party where all members had a say.
Time to think outside of the box, just because things were done one way in the past does not mean they need to carry on that way.

"You don't make sense..." Feeling is mutual.
"...Don't explain yourself". You're only seeing your box.
"Governance by all model. Like we used used to have in the Reform party.." - what this, a bad political joke? Explain yourself.
"Think outside the box" is history.
Sounds like you don't have any use for the present tools for governance, ie. constitution, by-laws etc. - not perfect for sure but to keep it light, I think you're just pulling our leg.
(Was tempted to ignore your post but have something else in mind depending how this is taken)

Thanks Rudy. It has been over a year now since the vote so I was curious if any MB churches now have a woman senior pastor. Seems like none exists yet.

Lorainne Dick is the interim lead pastor at Lendrum MB church in Alberta since July 2007.

Mary Anne Isaak is lead pastor of Clovis Community MB church in California.

Connie Epp is one of the pastoral team at River East MB church, Winnipeg, Manitoba - they function by roles and don't use the term "lead" or senior ... They haven't done so for some time to support women in the pastoral role. This was the first chuch to have a woman as a so-called "lead pastor" before the resolution was passed. Karen Heidebrecht-Thiessen led this church very effectively for many years and is now lead pastor in a Mennonite church in Abbotsford, B.C.
