Question of the month: June, 2007

What's the main message the church has communicated to me about sex?
It's a good gift from God (with guidelines)
It's dangerous and dirty
It shouldn't be discussed in polite company
It was created with strict, difficult rules
It's a reason for celebration
None -- my church has been silent about it

I think the fact that I had to really think hard about what my church taught me about sex is rather telling, I think. I had to think hard because I can't recall them saying a whole lot on the matter.

I wonder if that is because so many people in church leadership struggle with sexual sin - not really the kind of thing they want to bring up and focus on in a congregation when they are struggling or feeling guilty themselves.

I don't hear much said at church other than it is an activity to be kept within marriage but I suspect the youth are taught much on this topic. We have had some warnings regarding porn on the Internet. I have heard the most on this through Promise Keeper events where they get very up front with men about sexual activity. The last event I was to had a 'porn roast' (I think it was called) and videos, magazines and even computers were destroyed by some men who were turning their back on improper sexual activities. This is a big area of temptation and it is in our face with many TV commercials. I believe the church should teach lots about dealing with temptations so they don't lead to sinning.
