Although I voted charity it would actually be towards the debt reduction on our church renovations so I wasn't sure which category to pick.

The section called "other" left no room for additional information. I give most of my donations to charities other than churches (MCC not included in "churches"). Our family was looking for a place to put a "package" donation this last December rather than our usual exchange of gifts. And, (although there was still an exchange of gifts between husbands, wives, and children), we found it difficult to come up with a place to put a donation that did not involve "churches". (Here in BC, even the "shoebox" gifts have come under attack because they appear to be related to "churches".) We investigated the idea of giving a "water well" to some persons in Africa, but found that all of them were tied in to "churches". We eventually gave a substantial family donation to "Doctors Without Borders", for a couple of reasons--their "overhead" was minimal (which is something that really has to be investigated) and the eventual good that would come from some group that gives the gift of life seemed an ideal way to help out.
I do appreciate the fact that those that give to churches have some of their money fund orphanages (through their church) in other countries where the need is greater. But I feel that frequently the scrutiny as to where a lot of these funds go needs to be greater. We would like to support an orphan through "Save the Children" or whatever they call themselves now, but I understand from various sources that a lot of the funds tend to be misdirected.
Any comments?

Apple Grower are you suggesting that supporting the local church with monies is not a good place to give ? I'm not sure I understand why you want to avoid giving that is linked to 'churches'.

Post $1000 Windfall  Posted Jan 24, 2008; 11:26 am

Is this a vanishing vaporous hint that we have a lucky lottery winner in our midst? It's too early to get a tax return; condolences - if someone died and left an inheritance.

I was wondering why there was no answer for tithing your windfall, than applying the rest to something else.

Regarding tithing - some of us do not think tithing (a tenth) is a requirement for us today in the New Covenant era. The NT speaks more of cheerful and sacrificial (true generosity) giving rather than a fixed amount (i.e. one-tenth). Perhaps we should inquire of God what He wants to do with our windfall. Perhaps He would like the whole amount to be given to some poor family. Jesus was most impressed by the extravagant giving by the widow in Luke 21:2-4. He said her giving of 'two very small copper coins' was 'more than all the others' gave. This concerns me as I can't say that I know much about real sacrificial giving as I have so much beyond my needs.
