The question is asked in a way that I am uncertain how to respond ...
Are "feelings" the barometer here because
they are considered the means of assessment for the presence of the Holy Spirit in my life
or
Is the question expressing an interest in whether or not people can "feel" the Holy Spirit's presence and if so, how often does this occur
If feelings are the barometer to measure the presence of the Holy Spirit in my life, then I would not want to answer the question because I think it does an injustice to the Word of God (as revealed in Christ and his teachings, and passed on through scripture).
My assurance that the presence of the Holy Spirit is with me is based on a promise Christ made that the Holy Spirit would be given to us. My "feelings" have so many sources that it seems difficult to seperate them from the mystery of God's intimate work in my life. I live on the premise that God is uniquely at work amidst the cacophany of the deep human feelings generated through my senses, emotional capacity, intellect, and relatiionships.
If the Holy Spirit's work can be identified in my life as a "feeling", I would base this on "experiencing" the fruit of the Spirit in my life, as listed in Galatians 5:23 - love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, faithfulness, kindness, gentleness and self-control. I do "feel" or experience these in my life on a regular basis, and attribute them to the grace of God working in my life. On the basis that these characteristics are uniquely inspired by God, I could affirm an actual "feeling" of the Holy Spirit that is quite frequent. |
